BLASTOFF! Hilo Civil Air Patrol Cadets earn Model Rocketry Badge

Hilo, Hawai’i – On April 28th, 2023, 15 Cadets in the Civil Air Patrol’s (CAP) Lyman Field Composite Squadron, have earned the coveted CAP Model Rocketry Badge, something that these Cadets have been working on since November 2022. This marks the first time that Model Rocketry was done as a squadron activity and every Cadet that participated in the activity had a lot of fun. One Cadet said, “Model Rocketry is the best activity that I have done since joining CAP!”

In order for a CAP Cadet to earn the Model Rocketry Badge, they have to complete 3 stages, Redstone, Titan, and Saturn. Each stage requires a Cadet to take a written exam, assemble their rockets, and launch them successfully. Redstone rockets were launched at the CAP hangar, while the Titan and Saturn rockets were launched at the Kea’au RC Airfield.

Lyman Field Composite Squadron congratulates the following Cadets for earning their Model Rocketry Badge:

C/2dLt Vares-Kanaele, C/2dLt Hill, C/SMSgt Gatting K, C/TSgt Stickley, C/SSgt Loewen, C/SSgt Ballo, C/SrA Low, C/SrA Andersen, C/SrA Akiyama, C/A1C Gervais B, C/A1C Gervais K, C/A1C Caputo, C/A1C Goode, C/Amn Gatting L, and CADET Bob.

Cadet meetings are held every Friday from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the CAP hangar located at Hilo International Airport. Those aged 12-18 that are interested in becoming a pilot, joining the military, developing leadership skills, and physical training are encouraged to join. Adults are also welcome to join the Senior Member program.
